Bankfield Museum, Halifax

12th November - 31st December

Following the success of Wunderkammer, Schwab and Gaffney will be in action again in the autumn. They have been invited to “interact” with the permanent collection at Bankfield Museum in Halifax. The new venue underlines the flexibility of their project, for the acquisitions policy of this institution has been rather different fro that of Leeds City Art Gallery. There is no doubt at Leeds that the contents sit very comfortably on the armchair of “high art”. Bankfield, on the other hand, sees its “mission” principally as an education resource, it is noted for its textiles, and it houses “Calderdale Collects”, a showcase of domestic artefacts – more of a moving target than the Canova “Venus”. It will also be interesting to see what Schwab and Gaffney make of the collection of tissue wrapped dolls that are stored in the cellar.
